Hii, I’m Rafael
I was born in Switzerland to Portuguese parents, and I've always felt at home somewhere between the mountains of Switzerland and the Atlantic coast of Portugal. Growing up between two cultures taught me to appreciate different ways of seeing the world, and perhaps that's where my curiosity for exploring nature first began.
In 2021, I made the decision to leave Switzerland and move to northern Portugal. What I expected to be a new adventure became something much more meaningful. Living there allowed me to reconnect with my roots, slow down, and rediscover the beauty of a simpler life. It reminded me that some of the most memorable moments aren't the extraordinary ones… they're the quiet mornings, changing weather, long walks, and conversations that stay with you long after they've passed.
Photography naturally became part of that journey.
For me, landscape photography has never been about chasing the perfect image or ticking famous locations off a list. It's about being outside before the world wakes up, hiking through the mountains in uncertain weather, waiting for light that may never come, and appreciating that every experience is valuable, even when I return home without a single photograph.
Those moments have taught me patience, gratitude, and the importance of slowing down. My camera simply gives me a way to preserve those experiences and share them with others.
Every photograph on this website represents more than a beautiful landscape. Behind each image is a story, an early alarm, countless kilometres on the road, changing conditions, and moments of complete silence where nature reminds me how small we really are. Those are the experiences I hope you can feel when looking at my work.
My creative journey began while studying Web & Media Publishing, where I discovered photography as the perfect combination of creativity, technology, and storytelling. Over the years, that passion has grown into something much deeper. Today, photography isn't just what I do. It's how I experience the world.
Since becoming a father to my daughter, I've come to appreciate the passing of time in a completely new way. Watching her discover the world reminds me to slow down, stay curious, and notice the beauty in the smallest moments. That perspective has quietly shaped not only the way I live, but also the way I photograph the natural world.
Whether I'm exploring the Swiss Alps, wandering along Portugal's rugged coastline, or discovering somewhere entirely new, my goal remains the same: to slow down, connect with nature, and create photographs that allow others to experience a little of what I felt in that moment.
